Yasumasa Yonehara is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic and influential magazine editors and photographers in Japan.
Freelancing with some of the countries most important media institutions, Yonehara’s career has shaped the cultural fabric of Japan. He helped bring kogyaru culture into the mainstream during the 1990s with his early work at iconic magazine egg. Later, his brainchild Smart Girls — a collection of erotic Fujifilm “cheki” instant camera shots of the hottest female models — established Yonehara’s signature “lo-fi sexy” photographic style.
Shortly afterwards Yonehara’s sphere of influence became global, when brands such as American Apparel copied his unique
photographic style for use in advertising campaigns and in doing so spawning a new genre of editorial photography which traces it’s origin back to Yonehara’s instant polaroid camera style.
Sort after by fashion labels, music groups and advertising agencies as a creative director, in 2007 Yonehara launched the online publication, cexworks.com a blend of eroticism, news, art and blogs by influential photographers, friends and tastemakers from around the world.
In recent years, through photographic exhibitions exploring eroticism, continuity within discontinuity and the depth found in repetitious series of shots, Yonehara’s has introduces his unique aesthetic, vision and his privileged insight on Japanese Pop culture to the world of fine art.
September 2010, Backwoods Gallery is honoured to be hosting a solo exhibition of new work by Yasamasa Yonehara, consisting of a collection of original photography and installations
